How has the meaning of "Independence" evolved for Filipinos over time?⁠⁠ 🇵🇭
A little history: On this day in 1898, the Philippines, declared independence from Spain after more than 300 years of colonial rule. During the Spanish-American War, Filipino rebels led by Emilio Aguinaldo proclaimed the independence of the Philippines. ⁠⁠
🔹 We should talk about how our Philippine independence was followed by the occupation of the United States, and led to the outbreak of a bloody Philippine-American War in February 1899. Through many colonizations and occupations, the Filipino people have had to embrace a spirit of resilience and determination for our country. ⁠⁠
🔹 Also today, while Philippines celebrates 123 years of independence, protests are happening urging the government to end its dependence to the United States and China, and defend its sovereignty in the Philippine Sea.⁠⁠
🔹 Nevertheless, “Spirit of Freedom in Unity and National Healing” is the theme of the 123rd anniversary of the Philippine Independence Day.⁠⁠
🔹 "Independence" has taken different significance for Filipinos over time. Lourdes Capule, an online teacher from Bulacan, said that this celebration is for Filipino heroes.⁠⁠
🔹 “To me, the Philippine Independence Day is a strong reminder of everything our heroes selflessly dedicated so we could be free. It is also a good time to reflect on the values they imparted and how we can inculcate them in our lives,” she said. She said the country’s liberty was the Filipino heroes’ “ultimate goal,” reminding her of “how they valiantly fought” to set the Philippines free and give Filipinos their own identity.⁠⁠

You probably know by now that 19-year-old Filipina Yuka Saso just made history by becoming the first Filipino to win a major golf tournament and the 2nd teenager by winning the U.S. Women's Open.💫

I just love these quotes because I feel like it could be so applicable to one's journey any time in life when striving to achieve something. Yuka Saso was the “surprise” champion (at least to golf fans outside of the Philippines 😏) and while the contestant who was the lead started stumbling behind in the leaderboard, Yuka was making her way up... but she said she never let herself notice or put focus on it. ⁠⁠⚡️

"To be honest I was concerned about my golf rather than focusing on other players," she said. "My golf was bad so I needed to focus on myself. I wasn't really paying attention to anyone.⁠⁠

After the GOLD music video was written by Ella Jay Basco and her brother, they brought in Ruby Ibarra and Leslie Alejandro to help execute Ella’s vision to reality.⁠

During the production of the music video, Ella, Ruby, and Leslie emphasized the importance of creating a tight-knit, familial bond that reminded them of their purpose to empower Filipinas around the world and also serve as role models that the community, both young and old, can look up to.⁠

Identity plays a huge role in the music. The artists behind the production each have their version of what being Filipina American means to them. Leslie Alejandro is first-generation Fil-Am, Ruby Ibarra is 1.5 generation Fil-Am, and Ella Jay Basco is half Filipina and half Korean. However, they all embody the Filipina American spirit, which is what makes GOLD a special music video that celebrates our unity and solidarity as a community.⁠
