Filipina on the Rise - Podcast
Just some Pinay badassery for some midweek Inspira Just some Pinay badassery for some midweek Inspiration! Typo *Captain* Monessa Cantuncan-Balzhiser is the first Filipina to earn the privilege of flying the a state-of- the-art combat aircraft, commonly called “Viper”. Monessa Catuncan opted to fly the F-16 after becoming the first Filipina-American to pass the highly-coveted pilot course in 2007.

Early on, the young Filipina-American was inspired to become an astronaut by the movie – Armageddon. Her father explained to her how much hard work and perseverance she’d have to exert- and she went for it.

While still in high school, Monessa caught the attention of the Coast Guard, who invited her to Connecticut to interest her in becoming a Coast Guard helicopter pilot. Monessa went for 2 weeks to check out the Coast Guard, but in the end, she said she was not interested in flying helicopters. She wanted to be a fixed wing pilot. ✈️

After graduating at the top of her high school class, Monessa enrolled at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, majoring in aeronautical.

She took Pilot Training, and graduated as a student-pilot in her class. After, she went to Luke Air Force Base in Arizona to practice flying the F-16 and graduated with flying colors as the only woman in her group 🔥

She was awarded Texas’ Outstanding Public Servant. She “I’m very humbled and honored. Honestly, I was just doing my job. But it was a fun job at that.”

According to her mother, her favorite foods are adobo, afritada and kare-kare 😋

7 Lessons I Learned, closing out my birthday month 7 Lessons I Learned, closing out my birthday month! 🎉 As I reflect on this past year, I could honestly say I am proud of myself. This year, I took big risks. what happened?
🔹Got laid off from a company I loved~ instead of rushing to find another, I decided to embrace the uncertainty & lean into my passion
🔹 Dove deep into this Podcast, affirming my mission for this community! (made it to a top 100 Apple list! 😘)
🔹 Started my own consulting business [bringing diversity to tech] /became my own boss!
🔹 Moved to Miami ✨ to a home/life I literally visualized & manifested a year ago while down in the dumps 😭
🔹 PAID OFF ALL MY STUDENT DEBT 💀
🔹 let go of so many things, comforts, relationships, security (mid pandemic🤯); SCARY STUFF!

7 Lessons Learned:
1️⃣ Embracing uncertainty is one of the most powerful growth points
2️⃣ There comes a point where you can’t look around for the answers or advice from others anymore, you really have to look within. Trust your intuition. Others know only so much about your life, so trust the accumulation of your experiences have strengthened your wisdom
3️⃣ God and the universe works with whatever small faith you give. You just keep putting deposits of whatever you got.
4️⃣ In order to gain whatever new thing is waiting for you, you have to let go. Let go of what’s no longer serving you. Make space. Surrender & trust.
5️⃣Self awareness & self integrity is key AF, you may have to confront parts of yourself you’re scared of, but just beyond that is amazing growth
6️⃣be in your OWN BUSINESS. Don’t talk about others business, don’t mind it, mind your own.
7️⃣You don’t always have to be working on yourself. Embrace the art of being. Play, practice presence, produce nothing. Give yourself permission to just BE.

I feel so extremely grateful for this community and Filipina on the Rise. You all inspire me, encourage me, and I am more committed than ever to do the necessary work on myself & for others to be the kind of servant leader I want to be and continue to elevate & empower our global Pinay community.
I am confident about this year, what we can do as we step more into our power. let’s do this!💛✨💛✨

In the inside of my [very worn out] journal, are t In the inside of my [very worn out]
journal, are these words. They never fail to ground me and work their power. I say them out loud, as the vibration of your voice penetrates the unwanted beliefs.

I’m going through a season of shedding, and “growing pains,” where I’m hoping to “level up” but I’m confronting my deep insecurities & traumas in this process. One day I feel ready to build my empire!! And the next day I’m asking if I’m in over my head. Im also healing my own heart right now, and things hurt. Do not forget: In a season of transformation, there are attacks. The thing being undermined is not our skills or readiness, it’s our IDENTITY: “Who do YOU think you are, dreaming that big, aspiring for that, speaking out your truth, etc.”

In a season of significant shedding & transformation, there are attacks:
On your potential. Your identity. That make you question if you’re really *meant for it* or not.

These I AMS are POWERFUL✨

Posting them here for any one who can use it. I encourage you to save this, and say it. OUT LOUD. Speak it!! 👏🏼 I swear it’s powerful and you will feel a shift in your whole body!!

I also like to see which line speaks most powerfully in the moment. It is very telling of exactly what your soul needs, what YOU need to be reminded of in your current season. Each season, it will be different lines.

For me, it is “I have what it takes. I look to the future with confidence.”

Which one sparked something in you? Which line is fuel and fire for you right now??

Thank you @gritandvirtue for this ♥️♥️

Save & share this! I’m committing these next few Save & share this! I’m committing these next few weeks to educating myself & becoming anti-racist (yes, within my own community!) I know it's easy to ask the question, what can one do? Getting educated, self-aware, and connected to people in the community doing the work is an extremely effective way of rising past complacency and setting the foundation for what your own activism will look like. ✊🏽Here are a couple events coming up in the next few weeks to attend.

This could be great to share also with non-AAPI friends! If they ask, “what can I do, what is the problem like, how can I help,” hit em with the anti-racist education 👌🏽 link is in my bio!

Which one do you want to attend?
If y’all know of other events too, drop em in the comments 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼

In celebration of Women's History Month 2021, and In celebration of Women's History Month 2021, and to share the triumphs and accomplishments of powerful pinays, we are honoring five Filipinas who showed tremendous bravery, broke barriers in male-dominated fields, and spoke out during an era where women were encouraged to keep silent.

When people are asked to name Filipino heroes, the names that first come to mind are Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, Apolinario Mabini, or other men who fit into the typical hero mold of machismo and valor.

History books often devote entire chapters to the adventures and achievements of male heroes, and our female heroines are often bunched into one section, treated as footnotes or afterthoughts despite also risking their lives for freedom and self-expression.

From fighting for Philippine independence, venturing into the battlefield themselves, and championing women's rights, these women made their mark in history. Their stories deserve to be remembered and acknowledged.

Scroll through to read more about these amazing Filipinas, and let us know in the comments:

🔹Who is a woman in history that inspired you growing up?
🔹Who are some women you would add to this list?
🔹Who do you hope to inspire in the future?
